Buttery Russian Tea Balls – Classic Holiday Cookies
Ingredients:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar (plus extra for coating)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions:
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
Make the Dough:
In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Gradually add the flour, salt, and chopped nuts. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Shape the Balls:
Roll the dough into 1-inch balls using your hands. Place the balls about 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake the Cookies:
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the bottoms of the cookies are lightly golden. Avoid overbaking to keep them tender.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes.
Coat with Powdered Sugar:
While the cookies are still warm, roll them in powdered sugar until they’re fully coated. Place them on a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, roll them in powdered sugar again for an extra snowy finish.
Tips for Success:
Nut Options: Use your favorite nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, or even a mix of both for added flavor.
Make-Ahead: These cookies freeze well. Store them in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months and re-coat in powdered sugar before serving.
Customization: Add a pinch of cinnamon to the powdered sugar for a warm, spiced variation.
