Southern-Style Hamburger Steak (with Onion Gravy)
📝 Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
¼ cup bread crumbs
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and black pepper, to taste
1 egg
2 tbsp olive oil or butter (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
Salt and black pepper, to taste
🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Patties
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper
Mix gently until just combined
Form into 4–5 oval patties
2️⃣ Fry the Hamburger Steaks
Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat
Add patties and cook 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned
Remove patties from skillet and set aside
3️⃣ Make the Onion Gravy
In the same skillet, melt butter
Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute
Slowly whisk in beef broth
Season with salt and pepper
Simmer until gravy thickens
4️⃣ Finish Cooking
Return hamburger steaks to the skillet
Spoon gravy over patties
Cover and simmer 10 minutes until fully cooked and tender
